62 Total Apartments

Completed in 2015, the Erickson Saloon and Fritz Hotel buildings were transformed from vacant commercial spaces into 62 mixed-income apartment homes—just steps from IHI’s Modern Rich Apartments. This award-winning project received the 2015 Art DeMuro Award from Restore Oregon for excellence in historic restoration and adaptive reuse.

Originally built in the 1880s by August “Gus” Erickson, Erickson’s Workingman’s Club was a legendary Portland landmark. Spanning nearly an entire city block between Burnside/Couch and Second/Third Avenues, the saloon was known for its astonishing 684-foot bar, free smorgasbord lunches, and five-cent beers. The building featured five elegant entrances, a grand pipe organ, and employed 50 bartenders. During the 1894 flood, Erickson’s famously continued serving patrons from a barge at NW 2nd and Burnside.

Fred Fritz—an Old Town entrepreneur and cabaret impresario—operated several of his own establishments nearby, including Fritz’s Theater and Saloon, and eventually took over Erickson’s in 1907.
